How to Prepare Your Yard for a Construction Project

A little prep before construction saves your lawn, your trees, and your budget. Here's the pro checklist.

Any real construction project puts stress on the yard around it. A little planning up front protects your landscaping investment.

Identify a staging area. Pick the spot where materials and equipment will live. Better a small area of lawn sacrificed than the whole yard damaged.

Protect mature trees. Trunk wraps and root-zone fencing keep heavy equipment from compacting soil around trees that took decades to grow.

Move or mark sprinklers. Flag every head and lateral before the dig starts. Repair costs stack up fast when heads and lines get shredded.

Plan the finish. Talk to your contractor about post-construction cleanup, regrading, and sod repair before the job starts, not after.
